Sylvester, The Mighty Real - Eye Zen Presents

OUT of Site: Sylvester, The Mighty Real (Live Theatre/Walking Tour) is a new collaboration between Eye Zen Presents; Writer, Marvin K. White; Director, Michael French; and community partner SF Heritage, celebrating San Francisco's very own international disco diva, Sylvester.

Through an 2-month rehearsal/tech process and a 4-month theatrical run, our cohort will explore the hidden history of queer ancestor, Sylvester by providing an accessible historical understanding of racial equity within the queer liberation movement in the Haight of the 60’s and 70’s against the backdrop of civil rights, anti-war, student uprising, feminism, and Gay liberation.

This show is set to premiere in July with previews in June and run until October 1st, 2023. Rehearsals start April 2023.

All talent and crew required vaccinations prior to first rehearsal. Audience required to wear masks in-doors. All talent and crew will be hired as non-exempt employees of Intersection for the Arts, Eye Zen’s fiscal sponsor. All employees are on-boarded by Intersection’s HR team and must submit I-9 documents and sign Actors Equity Guest Artist contract.

Lead Role: Sylvester:

Seeking Black actor and singer, Gay/Bi/Trans/Nonbinary/Queer identified talent must be comfortable singing in falsetto or lip synch. Singers should be comfortable with Gospel and Soul style singing/music/culture. Actors should be comfortable with choreographed movement and have basic dance training or skills.

Height: 5’7” to 6” 11 (ideal height 5’10+, talent 5’7 wearing 4-6 inch footwear will give more height)

Playable age range: 30-55

Rate: $543.68 @ 24 wks of AEA Guest Artist Level 2 Contract

· Performer is comfortable with both scripted material that will be a series of monologues, dialogue and spoken word/poetic verse. They should be comfortable with improvisation with a strong ability to interact with an audience in the way a cabaret singer would in a call and response.

· Character range: The character will take us on an emotional journey. They are a larger-than-life, inspired and flamboyant gender-nonconforming internationally renowned disco diva and at times deeply introspective and will show vulnerability.

· The actor is quick on their feet/heels and has a good sense of humor and dexterous physicality.

· The actor is very comfortable with drag as well as a range of their gender presentation.

· The actor should be comfortable performing on the street and in public and with walking up to 3/4 of a mile per show.
