LEND ME A TENOR Begins 5/18 at Bay Street Theatre

Bay Street Theatre begins the 2013 Mainstage Season with Lend Me a Tenor (May 28 - June 23). This hilarious Ken Ludwig comedy started rehearsals this week in New York City under the direction of Don Stephenson. The cast includes Judy Blazer, Scott Cote, Betsy DiLellio, Donna English, Nancy Johnston, Noah Plomgren, Steve Rosen and Roland Rusinek. Ticket prices are $59.50 and $69.50. BWW Reviews: Raleigh Natives Shine in NC Theatre's THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

It's an old-fashioned musical - with a twist. NC Theatre's current production is the 2006 Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, subtitled, 'A Musical Within a Comedy.' The show's premise is that the narrator, named simply Man in Chair, guides the audience through his favorite show album (on vinyl, of course), the fictitious 1928 The Drowsy Chaperone. In a tongue-in-cheek look at the musical comedies of Broadway in the 1920s, the Man in Chair provides modern-day commentary on the things that make such shows at once laughable and wonderful. The show-within-the-show tells of a star, Janet Van Der Graaff, about to give up life on stage for marriage. Of course, no classic musical would be complete without its own off-the-wall subplots. The Drowsy Chaperone includes everything from a spit-take obsessed butler/hostess pair to pun-loving gangsters disguised as bakers, as well as Van Der Graaff's chaperone who has her own romantic entanglements with the hopelessly clumsy Adolfo. The premise is what makes this show work - the modern-day lens creates a show which is accessible without sacrificing on humor. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Scott RC Levy, Max Ferguson and Cory Moosman Discuss Fine Arts Center's THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Starting today, the Fine Arts Center is delivering a love letter to musical comedy with The Drowsy Chaperone, a show the New York Times praised as 'a revved-up spoof of a 1920s song-and-dance frolic.' At a recent dress rehearsal I was able to sit down with several members of the cast and crew, beginning with Scott RC Levy, director of the Fine Arts Center who is making his Colorado acting debut as Man in Chair, the character guides the audience through the cast recording of the titular Jazz Age musical. Located within Hotel Nikko (222 Mason Street, San Francisco), Feinstein's at the Nikko will present a wide range of local, regional and national entertainers in an intimate 140-seat cabaret setting. Minnetonka Theatre's 9 TO 5 Opens 7/19

Tickets are now on sale for Minnetonka Theatre's summer production of 9 to 5 - The Musical, presented on the Arts Center on 7 Main Stage July 19- August 3. Based on the hit 20th Century Fox Picture, the story follows three female coworkers as they join forces in the late '70s to get even with their "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" boss after he pushes them past their limits. 'I hate the theater; it's so disappointing,' may be the most ironic opening line in recent memory. The Drowsy Chaperone, is nothing less than a celebration of musical comedy in all its beautiful and frequently absurd glory, and the Fine Arts Center's production of it is as entertaining an experience as you can find in the region right now. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul Add 2nd DOGFIGHT Cast Recording Concert at Joe's Pub, 5/15

BENJ PASEK and JUSTIN PAUL have added a second show at Joe's Pub at The Public on Wednesday, May 15. An 11:30 PM show was just added due to popular demand after the 9:30 PM show sold out. The Tony Award nominated composer and lyricist team is celebrating the new Ghostlight Records cast recording of Dogfight. Both shows will features performances by the original cast of the Second Stage Theatre production and other special guests. Dogfight just won the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for "Outstanding Musical."
